Comparing Nespresso®* Essenza Mini and Nespresso®* Pixie – Two compact machines

The Nespresso®* Essenza Mini and the Nespresso®* Pixie are the two smallest and most basic machines in Nespresso’s®* current assortment. To find out which one of them better suits your needs, it makes sense to take a closer look at what each of them has to offer. We hope that our comparison will help you make the right choice.

The Nespresso®* Essenza Mini

The Essenza Mini is the most compact Nespresso®* machine that is currently on the market. It is a newer model that was introduced to replace the Nespresso®* Inissia. With a recommended retail price of $149.00, the Essenza Mini is not only the smallest but also the most cost-effective machine that Nespresso®* has to offer. It is especially popular with first-time buyers.

Regarding its features, the Essenza Mini convinces coffee lovers with:

  • its 19-bar pump pressure system
  • a used capsule container capacity of 6 pods
  • two programmable cup sizes (for espresso and lungo)
  • an automatic shut-off after 9 minutes
  • a removable water tank with a capacity of 20.3 oz
  • its low weight of only 5 lbs.

With its measurements of only 4.3 x 8 x 12.8 in. (W x D x H), the Essenza Mini fits into every kitchen. It is available in 2 distinctive shapes, and 5 different colors. Unlike the body of fancier Nespresso®* models, which are often made of high-quality metal, the Essenza’s compartments are entirely made of plastic. Its drip tray cannot be folded up. However, users have the option to remove the drip tray entirely, e.g. when preparing a latte macchiato: this way, the machine can also fit taller cups or glasses.

The Nespresso®* Pixie

The Nespresso®* Pixie is slightly bigger than the Essenza Mini, but just as intuitive and easy to use. On their website, Nespresso®* currently offers the Pixie for $229.00, which makes it more expensive than the Essenza Mini. The reason for the higher price might lie in the more high-grade materials used – the side compartments, as well as the locking lever and the drip tray, are made of metal.

The Nespresso®* Pixie offers the following features:

  • a 19-bar pump pressure system
  • a used capsule container capacity of 10 pods
  • two programmable cup sizes (for espresso and lungo)
  • an automatic shut-off after 9 minutes
  • a removable water tank with a capacity of 24 oz
  • low weight of 6.6 lbs.

In addition, it comes with an empty water tank alert, meaning that red backlights along the sides of the machine light up to remind you when you need to fill the tank. The Essenza Mini does not offer this feature. Furthermore, the Nespresso®* Pixie’s drip tray can be folded up to accommodate different cup sizes. It is currently available in 3 different colors.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Nespresso®* Essenza Mini and the Nespresso®* Pixie

Both the Nespresso®* Essenza Mini as well as the Pixie are compact, space-saving machines, which will make a great addition to your kitchen. With its high-quality aluminum siding and its empty water tank detection, the Pixie is a bit more sophisticated. Also, the fact that its drip tray is foldable is a clear advantage. When using the Essenza Mini to prepare a longer drink in a bigger cup, you will have to remove the tray completely – the Pixie’s tray can simply be flipped.

Regarding cup sizes, both machines offer two pre-set cup settings with reprogrammable volumes. As with all Nespresso®* coffee machines, the two models come with a 19-bar pressure pump and a thermoblock heating unit, which guarantee a well-tempered espresso with a rich crema.

The Pixie’s empty capsule container has a larger capacity than the container of the Essenza Mini, which means you will not have to empty it as often. Same goes for the water tank, which does not have to be refilled as regularly.

A clear advantage of the Essenza Mini is that it comes in many different colors, e.g. in red or green, while the Pixie’s colors are more discreet. The strongest argument for the Essenza Mini, however, is its comparably low price: While the Pixie costs $229.00, you can buy the Essenza Mini for only $149.00.

Which machine should you choose?

As always, there is no general answer to this question. Both machines are small and fit into (almost) every kitchen. The difference in features is rather minimal. If you prefer bright colors, and want to save some money, we recommend you buy the Essenza Mini. It is a great machine for beginners! If your budget is a little bigger and you want a machine that looks more elegant, we suggest you go for the Pixie.
