  • Mexican Coffee Recipe

End Your Meal with the Sweet Indulgence of Mexican Coffee

Looking for the right Mexican coffee recipe turns up a few different drinks, all called “Mexican coffee” and all somewhat different.

Sometimes there’s alcohol, sometimes not. Most feature extra spices like cinnamon. What all the different Mexican Coffee Recipes have in common is added sweetness to turn coffee from a morning pick-me-up into a delicious after-dinner delight.

In many cultures, after-dinner coffee is thought to aid in the digestion, and encourage additional conversation after the meal is over. And who are we to argue with that? So here’s two of our favorite Mexican coffee recipes, so you pick the one that’s right for your next luxurious get-together.

    Mulled Spices Mexican Coffee Recipe

This version combines elements like cloves with sugar and coffee to make a spicy drink reminiscent of “mulled” wine and similar concoctions. A powerful, distinctive taste that ends a meal with an exclamation point.

    • 12 cups of hot coffee
    • 1 half cup packed brown sugar
    • 4 tablespoons ground cinnamon
    • 4 whole cloves
    • 1 half cup chocolate syrup
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • Whipped cream to add on top for extra sweetness

Add brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves together into the hot, freshly made coffee. Mix until the sugar is dissolved. Then add the chocolate syrup and vanilla. Pour up the coffee and top each cup with a little whipped cream if the drinker wants.

Feel the Burn: The Tequila Mexican Coffee Recipe

Another popular way to spice up your Mexican style coffee is with the addition of liquor. Much like an after-dinner cocktail, alcoholic Mexican coffee closes out main meal and sets up your dinner guests for good times and good conversation ahead.

    • 12 cups of hot brewed coffee
    • 2 cans (14 oz.) condensed milk
    • 2 cups coffee liqueur
    • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ? cup tequila
    • ground cinnamon to taste

Mix all the ingredients together until evenly blended. The coffee liqueur is the most important part, with tequila available for those who want even more of a kick. The sweet, flavorful burn creates a memorable end cap between dinner and the rest of the night’s festivities.

Drinking Your Gourmesso Coffee, Mexican Style

These two recipes have something else in common: both are huge, communal batches of coffee that assume everyone wants their drinks delivered in the exact same way. Not exactly the Gourmesso method.

So Here’s another way to add more “Mexican” flavor to your Gourmesso and allow every one of your guests to receive a tailor-made experience.

    • ground cinnamon
    • ground cloves
    • cocoa powder
    • vanilla creamer
    • chocolate syrup
    • coffee liqueur
    • frothed milk
    • coarse brown sugar
    • coarse sea salt

For each of your guests, brew an individually selected, custom-chosen cup of their personal Nespresso®* compatible capsule favorites. Then hand the cup over and let them add the flavors that best fit their personality.

It’s worth noting, especially for espresso, that little additions go a long way. Just a little sprinkle of most of the solid ingredients, and a little dab of the liquid ones can have a profound effect on how the espresso tastes.

For the frothed milk, turning your espresso into a latte is quite simple. And sprinkling a little cinnamon or cloves onto the top of the froth is both visually pleasing and tastefully enthralling.
Once the mixing is done, what better way to end the first cup than by making a second cup and decorating it with an entirely new, diverse set of ingredients.

If there’s one thing you should take away from this, it’s that there is no one Mexican coffee recipe you need to follow. Just a general outline of spices and flavors you can tailor to your heart’s content. And customizing it to suite your own ideas can be one of the most rewarding ways to present it to your group.

Get mixing, and enjoy from Gourmesso!

  • How much do you want to spend for your daily cup of coffee? As one of the oldest luxury goods still being consumed by most everyone on the planet, the price of coffee can be as exclusive as you want it to be.

Most expensive coffee in the world Coffee is one of the oldest luxury goods. Photo: McKay Savage

A popular method of conspicuous consumption, the extremely wealthy are always on the lookout for a barrier of entry high enough to show how much better they are than everyone else! Luckily, modern advances in cultivation, collection and roasting mean a really good cup of coffee is actually in anybody’s reach.

What does it take to be the most expensive coffee in the world? A combination of strange circumstance, a really interesting story, and intensive labor requirements. And don't think most expensive necessarily means best, because there’s a few reasons you might want to steer clear of this particular cup.

Kopi Luwak: $75 Per Cup for Something the Cat Dragged In

One of the highest priced cups of coffee you can find in the world today involves a unassuming omnivorous mammal native to Indonesia known as the civet cat.

When the Dutch originally opened colonial Indonesia to coffee production back in the 18th century, multiple species of these civet cats soon modified their natural foraging behavior to sneak onto these plantations to feed on the ripe coffee berries. Digesting only the pulp, the coffee bean passed through the civet cat's digestive system relatively intact.

It was only a matter of time before a brave native inhabitant tried to roast, grind and brew those expelled beans.

The result was a surprisingly smooth coffee.

Soon "Kopi Luwak," aka "Cat Coffee," became a distinct regional phenomenon around Indonesia and other parts of southeast Asia. But it wasn’t until the 20th century that the popularity of the beverage traveled westward, eventually to Europe and even the United States.
Today, Kopi Luwak can be found at only the most expensive coffee establishments, and the taste is all the rage among the most daring and affluent coffee drinkers. A single cup of Kopi Luwak can run upwards of $75. The beans are in high demand, and they are very difficult to collect in sufficient quantities thanks to civet cats not always cooperating.

And that's how you get the most expensive coffee in the world!

You may have also seen "Black Ivory" Coffee, which is almost the same process only with elephants instead of civet cats. Rather than a traditional preparation, Black Ivory Coffee is a modern development with the purpose of supporting rescue elephant populations in Indonesia. It's also very expensive, thanks to the habit of elephants of chewing many of the the beans into oblivion.

While the well-off might be clamboring for these special treats, among seasoned coffee drinkers it’s a well-known fact there’s not much different about the taste of Kopi Luwak you can’t get anywhere else. The flavor is described as smooth, with a distinct reduction in bitterness. But the flavor profile itself is also diminished, as many of the more complex chemicals present in normal coffee are destroyed or altered by the enzyme-soaked digestive journey.

    Exclusive Single-Source Coffee Locations

If you choose to stay out of other animal’s digestive systems, the exclusivity of coffee suddenly drops quite a bit. Today, one of the most exclusive coffee sources are Jamaica Blue Mountain Beans. A pound of beans might run you as high as $50, but far from the $200 to $600 price tag the civet cats are charging.

The big problem is this: coffee drinkers can’t seem to decide what the best coffee really is!
Depending on who you ask, the best coffee could come from Columbia, from the Antigua region of Guatemala, the Sidamo Province of Ethiopia and other places around the globe.

Much like wine, the flavor profile of good coffee is intensely complex and incredibly diverse.
Arabica coffee beans are some of the most prized, and they can be grown easily in many regions. And wherever it grows, the taste is slightly different but not necessarily better or worse.

Gourmesso Offers Coffee From All Over the World

So, for good or bad, the search for the most expensive coffee can lead down many paths. And as any mature coffee drinker knows, the act of discovery is one of the most enjoyable parts of expanding your coffee horizons!

That's why Gourmesso carries a variety of different types of coffee instead of just one. Some of them are single source, like the Tarrazu (from one of the most prized coffee regions of Costa Rica). While others contain coffee from multiple sources like our Etiopia Blend.

No matter what you pick, you certainly won't find the most expensive coffee in the world. But you'll find something immeasurably delicious!

  • Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! If you’ve got a special someone in your life, you’re probably starting to wonder about Valentine's day gift ideas.

Do they love coffee? If the answer is yes, we at Gourmesso have 5 coffee-themed ideas to jumpstart your creativity and get your gift-giving mind running at full speed.

Valentine's Day Gifts for Coffee Lovers A Cup of Coffee With a Dash of Love Photo: Mary Anne Morgan

    1. Coffee Mug

Picking out the right Coffee Mug should start with figuring out if your loved one needs a new Mug at all. Does he or she have a promotional mug they found at some garage sale? Do they just use one of the mugs from the dining set?

There’s a world of online services out there ready create a personalized coffee mug of your own creation. Seeing images from your life together creates just the right mood a good Valentine’s Gift should go for.

    2. Milk steamer

The only thing better than straight coffee or espresso is steamed milk to enrich the experience. While straight cold milk from the jug might dilute the taste of black coffee, true latte adds a sweet delicious flavor all its own.

Using a quality milk Steamer, you can get the same frothy, bubbling, rich and creamy taste as a latte or cappuccino from the favorite coffee shop you both spent many wonderful evenings at.
Unlike the barista behind the coffee bar, you don’t have the years of experience get the foam exactly how you want it, so make sure you’ve got a steamer that takes the hard part off your hands. So you can make the coffee, pour up the foam, and enjoy a wonderful moment together with the least amount of hassle on your part!

    3. Valentine’s Day Chocolate Coffee Cake

If you’re planning on staying up late this Valentine’s Day, the best complement to a delicious cup of good, strong coffee is a suitably sweet treat.

While some Valentine's day gift ideas cost a lot, a rich chocolate cake is mostly an investment in time. And if your sweetheart appreciates homemade gifts, this cake is just the thing you both can enjoy together all evening long.

Instead of making your cake from scratch (because who has time for that?), here’s an easy way to turn boxed cake mix into an extravagant treat. This will make the cake you threw together taste like something you picked up from a bakery.

Start with a typical boxed cake mix from the grocery store. Follow the instructions on the box, with the following substitutions:

      • When the instructions say to add eggs, add 1 more egg than instructed
      • When the instructions say to add oil, use melted butter instead and use twice as much
      • When the instructions say to add water, use milk instead. And if you are making a chocolate cake, go ahead and add ½ of a cup of strong coffee to the mix as well.

Mix your new fortified batter together well, pour it into the pan and follow the rest of the directions for heating.

This cake will be a tasty delight for both of you. Still a little warm from the oven, combined with a pair of steaming coffee cups, it will add plenty of sweetness to whatever else you have planned for the evening.
