After the boiling, the process the coffee beans are taken to another container and a solvent is added. The process takes a relatively long, but the process is relatively cheap and recommended on small-scale coffee decaffeination. Methylene Chloride Treatment

Methylene chloride is a very strong solvent that quickly acts on the caffeine. The acidic nature of caffeine reacts with the chloride forming a complex compound. The complex compound can easily be extracted from the mixture after this. Methylene chloride residue is non-toxic in nature and will not affect your health even if it’s left in the coffee. However, if you are still unsure of the non-toxic nature of the chloride, it is also very volatile and quickly evaporates in the presence of heat leaving the coffee free of any residue.

Carbon-Dioxide Treatment

Carbon-Dioxide treatment is the most advanced decaffeination technique. Carbon dioxide in high pressure has very strong solvent properties. The coffee is put in a container with the pressurized oxide. Pressurized carbon dioxide looks like a liquid though it is in the gas state. Once the caffeine is absorbed, the coffee is transferred to a container with less pressure and the oxide escapes with the caffeine leaving behind high-quality decaf coffee. The method is highly efficient and considered to remove the most amount of coffee.

Even the most efficient process in decaffeination will not result into 100% decaf coffee; traces will always be left behind.
