Take a look at the facts!

Capsules vs. K-Cups®*

To understand the differences between Nespresso and Keurig®*, one should analyse the capsule itself.

The Nespresso capsule is made mainly from aluminum and uses a food-grade lacquer inside to further protect drink ingredients. Each Nespresso capsule goes under a series of multiple and strategic perforations depending on the requirements of the particular coffee, these patterns adjust brewing times and temperatures, as needed. Every cup of Nespresso consists of a crema layer that distinguishes a true cup of espresso coffee from your regular espresso.

The Keurig®* K-cup®* consists of a plastic cup and an aluminium lid that is sealed with nitrogen to maintain its ideal freshness. The top of the lid is pierced by a patented spray nozzle from the Keurig®* as well as a discharge nozzle that perforates the plastic base. The pod has a filter inside that contains the coffee grounds as water is pumped through.

Brewing Process

In terms of machinery and end result, both Nespresso and Keurig®* can be very homogeneous. Both work with pods, by inserting them in the machine and brewing the finest coffee the industry has to offer. Concerning the similarities between the Nespresso and Keurig®* machines, both take part in pressurized hot water shooting through coffee grounds by creating a palatable beverage.

Although the original Nespresso contained around 1.3 ounces of espresso, the specialists of coffee know that espresso comes from more finely-grown coffee beans than traditional coffee, arising a much-desired coffee. This was Nespresso's signature for a while until more was demanded and they launched a line of machines that produced a 7.8 fluid ounce cup of espresso coffee.

Cleaning Process

All coffee machines, including Nespresso and Keurig®* machines, build up hard deposits of calcium and lime from water. Descaling your machine will remove these deposits, allowing the coffee to achieve a proper extraction, therefore improving it's flavor and temperature. Since flavor and temperature are two key components to the overall coffee experience it’s important to keep the machine running like new.

Fairtrade Coffee & Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Coffee

Fairtrade's standards are designed to tackle poverty and empower producers in the world’s poorest countries, giving them a guaranteed price for their products. Rainforest Alliance certification focuses on how farms are managed, with certification being awarded to farms that meet the comprehensive standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). This certifies that the coffee is grown to meet standards that require environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Coffee from Nespresso or Keurig®* are NOT Fairtrade Coffee nor Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Coffee. Proudly, our alternatives to Nespresso brand coffee capsules are Fairtrade and our alternative Keurig K-Cup®* coffee pods are Rainforest Alliance Certified™.

Environmental Impact

Neither Keurig®* K-cups nor Nespresso capsules are recyclable. For K-Cups®*, the plastic and foil construction makes separating the components difficult, while Nespresso capsules combine aluminum and lacquer. This means that each pod or capsule ends up as landfill waste.

Glorybrew offers you pods for Keurig®* machines that are 100% compostable! Compostable is not the same thing as biodegradable or simple recycling--it's better! Made from plant-based materials, these pods will disintegrate in compost piles in just under 12 weeks. Unfortunately our alternative to Nespresso aren't yet compostable but we are in the process of designing and introducing such pods!
