Coffee or Espresso - What is the Difference?

In their most basic sense, both coffee and espresso are made from two types of coffee beans, Arabica or Robusta. Coffee and espresso begin to take their individual form during the roasting process. Espresso beans go through a stronger roasting process and give off more of their caffeine and coffee acids throughout the process. However, because you use a smaller amount of water when preparing an espresso, the caffeine levels ends up at a higher percentage than a normal cup of coffee. Finally, a shorter brewing process leads to a less bitter taste, as there is less time to extract bitter substances from the coffee grinds.

What Makes Robusta Beans Unique?

Compared to the cultivation of Arabica beans, harvesting Robusta beans is somewhat easier. Robusta beans can be grown in lower altitudes as they can withstand higher heat and humidity levels than can Arabicas. Espresso drinkers can differentiate Robusta beans by their full-bodied taste, more stable crema and higher caffeine levels. Robusta beans are exceptionally popular in Italy as espresso drinkers expect to find the special Robusta flavor in every espresso. The London Stock Exchange sets the global market price of Robusta beans.
