Nespresso®* Essenza vs Nespresso®* Maestria
With so many great espresso machines to choose from, it is easy to get overwhelmed. Narrowing your options down and comparing items head-to-head is a surefire way to choose the best espresso machine for your purposes. Here is a look at the Nespresso®* Essenza vs. Nespresso®* Maestria models to help you decide which is better for your home espresso needs.
Differences - Nespresso®* Essenza Review vs. Nespresso®* Maestria Review
Differentiating between two products is a more effective way to highlight what makes them unique as opposed to looking at what makes them similar.
The Nespresso®* Essenza is a Swiss-style espresso machine while the Nespresso®* Maestria is an Italian inspired barista-style espresso machine. While Swiss-made precision is high up on many espresso enthusiast's lists, Italian-made perfection is equally as high on others. It's a matter of preference.
The Nespresso®* Essenza is shaped more like an old-time radio, lending a unique form and style to your counter while the Nespresso®* Maestria has the classic barista feel like espresso machines you would find in Italian cafes.
The Maestria is available in cream on the Nespresso®* website, but can also be found in black and red through box stores and online storefronts. The Essenza is currently available in black and titanium gray, though only the housing changes colors. Custom colors such as purple and red can be found in stores and through online storefronts.
Water Reservoir Size
The size of the water reservoir determines how many shots of espresso you can make without refilling the tank. The Essenza is meant for single shots of espresso so the water reservoir tank holds 30 fluid ounces. The Maestria can crank out more espresso shots on just one tank of water thanks to its 47 fluid ounce capacity.
Depending on the size cup you prefer, you might need less or more capacity. For example, the modern coffee cup holds about 11 ounces, so the Essenza would brew you slightly less than three cups (three 10 oz cups to be exact). Both water tanks are removable for ease of cleaning.
Insert and Eject Coffee Capsule
Both Nespresso®* machines make it effortless to insert coffee capsules and both automatically eject the coffee capsules into a spent capsule holder. Each capsule holder allows for 10 to 14 spent capsules depending on the brand capsule you purchase. The Essenza is not compatible with ESE capsules.
While both machines offer removable drip trays for ease of cleaning, the Nespresso®* Essenza is made of plastic and covered with stainless steel. The Essenza drip tray holds 12 fluid ounces of liquid and should be emptied and cleaned daily. The stainless steel drip tray of the Nespresso®* Maestria flips up, meaning it can accommodate different cup sizes. This allows you to brew up any size coffee, from a 0.84 ounce ristretto to a full 11 ounce cup of coffee.
The authentic barista-style steaming wand on the Maestria allows for a more authentic froth, the kind you would expect out of a premium coffee house or cafe. You can get the exact frothiness you desire every time by using the easy-to-master, built-in steaming wand. The Essenza does not have a steaming wand so if you do want frothing for lattes and espressos, you will have to purchase a milk frother separately.
The Nespresso®* Maestria uses 1710 Watts of power which allows it to heat up in just 25 seconds. It also has an automatic shutoff features after 9 minutes, helping to conserve energy and keep your electric bill down. The Nespresso®* Essenza uses 1200 Watts of power to quickly brew up single shots of espresso, but does not have an automatic shutoff feature.
Auto-Shutoff / Power Saving
As mentioned above, only the Maestria has power saving features, so if you are concerned about your energy bill or if you are the type to run out of the house without shutting down appliances, the Maestria works better.
Being smaller and containing less features, it is no surprise that the Nespresso®* Essenza is more affordable than the Nespresso®* Maestria. The Essenza retails for $199 in most online storefronts while the Maestria retails at $449. The Maestria’s extensive features, built-in steaming wand, ability to accommodate more cup size, and overall quality of construction account for the large price difference. The Essenza makes more sense for those shopping for budget espresso makers and those looking for a single-serve machine.
What are the Similarities - Nespresso®* Essenza vs. Nespresso®* Maestria
Of course, there are many similarities to be found in the head-to-head Nespresso®* Essenza vs. Nespresso Maestria comparison. Namely, both are extremely capable of making a quality shot of espresso thanks to the 19 bar high-pressure pumps. This ensures maximum flavor extraction so that you can enjoy your favorite coffee shop blends right in the comfort of your own home without losing any of that coffeehouse taste.
Both also utilize Nespresso®*'s patented Thermo-block Heating Technology to ensure that you get the perfect temperature each and every time. The Nespresso®* Essenza and Nespresso®* Maestria both have removable water tanks and drip trays for easy cleanup. The outside housing of the units can be cleaned with damp cloths and both have rave customer reviews about being no-mess espresso machines. Of course, the Maestria does have a frothing wand so there will likely be more mess than with the Essenza.
Pros & Cons - Nespresso®* Essenza Review vs. Nespresso®* Maestria Review
Here are a few of the pros and cons that popped up during this Nespresso®* Essenza vs. Nespresso®* Maestria head to head challenge:
The Maestria has a lot more pros than the Essenza, namely the steaming wand, power saving features and some of the others already mentioned, but there are a few more pros to speak about. The Maestria has automatic and adjustable coffee volume dials. It can also be set for soft, medium and hard water settings to accommodate any location.
The Nespresso®* Maestria is built of a high quality anodized aluminum exterior, has a pivoting shelf for glass size adjustment and comes with a built-in descaling alarm. In addition, the Maestria uses compact brewing technology to keep the overall footprint (6.7 x 15.4 x 11.9 inches; 11 pounds) down.
The Nespresso®* Essenza is even more compact at 8 x 13.5 x 13.4 inches and 6 pounds, 10 ounces. The Essenza also has a backlit button so you aren't fumbling around in the dark.
The cons to each of these models can also be viewed as pluses depending on your view. The high price of the Nespresso®* Maestria is a quality investment for some. The small capacity of the Essenza is perfect for single people. The only real con here is that the Nespresso®* Essenza doesn't come with a milk frother - that will have to be purchased separately.
