What is a Lungo in coffee terms?

Lungo is originally an Italian term for a coffee beverage made by using an espresso machine to make an Italian-style coffee, short black (single or double dose or shot) with much more water (generally with a double amount of water), resulting in a larger coffee. It’s basically an espresso, but made with more water.

A normal serving of espresso fills 25 to 60 millilitres, while a lungo might fill 130 to 170 millilitres. Extraction time of the dose is determined by the variety of coffee beans, their grind and the pressure of the machine.

Does a Lungo have less intensity or flavour than an Espresso?

This is a common misconception and short answer is no. A Lungo has the same intensity and flavour than an Espresso and is simply an extended version of an espresso shot that is prepared using very similar methods of extraction. The main difference comes from the fact that a Lungo shot uses twice the amount of water as an espresso, but the same amount of ground coffee and since is specifically designed to be optimally developed in a long extraction for large cups is able to maintain it’s full flavor potential.

Can you prepare a Lungo coffee with an Espresso capsule?

You can but you shouldn't, because the coffee blends and their respective flavours are put together specifically with the extraction time in mind. Lungos are specifically designed to be optimally developed in a long extraction for large cups maintaining their full flavor potential. On the other hand, designed for small cups, Espresso would develop unwanted aromas in a 110 ml long extraction.
