The Future of Economic Sustainability for One Cup Coffee Machines

There is no doubt that one cup coffee machines are extremely popular among the coffee drinking community. Thousands of people all across the country, and even world, regularly use their Keurig machines for their morning, afternoon, or evening coffees. However, over the last decade, there has been a noticeable change in coffee users.

As greater numbers of younger people are starting to drink coffee, they are also bringing their environmentally conscious ways to the industry. One of the ways in which they are forcing coffee manufacturers to change is through sustainable coffee pods. In fact, as much as 59 percent of coffee consumers are actively thinking about the sustainability of their coffee pods when purchasing them.

This is the reason why 100 percent compostable pods like Glorybrew, have become one of the most popular coffee products in recent years. Consumers not only want to purchase eco-friendly pods but will pay a bit more for products that they know are eco-friendly. If a coffee brand makes it well known that they are dedicated to environmental sustainability, then 66 percent of consumers have said that they would not mind paying a little bit more than the price of less environmentally-friendly products.

Single Use Can Be Green

A common misconception is that single-use product such as coffee pods are not eco-friendly. This is a misconception that has caused 44 percent of coffee drinkers to start cutting back on their single-cup coffee. While it is true that many single-cup coffee products are not particularly good for the environment, that is not true for all products in this category.

There have been many new products that have come out in the last few years that deliver the same great one cup of coffee while also being much for environmentally-friendly. Some examples include the aforementioned Glorybrew coffee pods that are 100 percent compostable. If the one-cup coffee machines want to keep growing their customer base, then they are going to need to embrace this eco-friendly wave and keep releasing green products.

Not All Labels Are the Same

When customers see a product that appears to be even remotely environmentally-friendly, they tend to make the mistake of believing that it is obviously good for the environment. However, these customers are often misled by these labels because they do not understand that not all eco-friendly terms are reliable.

The three most common categories that products use are biodegradable, recyclable, and 100 percent compostable. Unfortunately, not all of these categories are as reliable as they should be. Biodegradable coffee products receive no standardized testing and certification. These biodegradable claims are not even accepted by government regulators.

When it comes to recyclable coffee products, it is the consumers who are required to separate hot pods, which creates a very inconvenient situation. What is even worse is that only about 10 percent of the products are actually recyclable because they end up being too small or light to be processed.

The last category is 100 percent compostable coffee products, which does not require the consumer to do any kind of organization or separation. These products are BPI tested and certified to confirm that they end up turning into biomaterial within 84 days after disposal.
